What kinds of leisure activities do Vietnamese people like? Why?
-
Without a doubt, there is a wide range of activities for urban citizens to enjoy their leisure time. The most preferred ones include reading, watching movies, dining out, going to amusement parks or hanging out at shopping malls. Besides, doing exercise in the park is also popular, especially among middle-aged adults. Many are keen on running, jogging, and brisk walking, such sort of things. In the countryside, most people are fond of going fishing or gardening, and I believe they can easily combine work and leisure together this way.
Do you think old people have more leisure time than young people?
-
I do think so. Old people tend to have retired from work and their children have also grown up so there are virtually no commitments to occupy their time other than their leisure pursuits. However, their health tends to decline rapidly so they might find it hard to truly enjoy their ample leisure time. (*occupy: chiếm / other than = except / leisure pursuits: thú tiêu khiển)
Do you think men have more leisure time than women?
-
I suppose so. In most families, both men and women are now working full time. However, women are still responsible for the majority of household duties while men, especially Asian men, can feel free to spend their leisure time after work in bars and pubs. This is so unfair and the stereotype that men are not suitable to be a caregiver is just a lame excuse for this perpetuated gender inequality. (*stereotype: định kiến / caregiver: người chăm sóc / perpetuated: ăn sâu)
Do you think people nowadays have less leisure time than people in the past?
-
Sample 1: Yeah, it’s totally true. In the past, people used to work hard but their working day ended when they left their office. Today, however, it’s easy to bring work home just with a laptop or a smartphone. Many people have to stay up late or work during the weekends and as a result, they don’t have sufficient time to relax and enjoy life.
-
Sample 2: It's hard to say really. On the one hand, technological advancements and automation have made many daunting tasks such as housework more efficient, helping people save a great deal of time. On the other hand, modern society has become too fast-paced and competitive, resulting in increased work hours and higher demands on productivity. Besides, the rapid development of technology has necessitated the need for continuous learning, putting a lot of pressure on people’s time.
What kinds of leisure activities for kids are popular in Vietnam?
-
It depends on each area I’d say. In the city, kids usually enjoy structured leisure activities such as reading, playing video games, going to amusement parks or learning musical instruments. In the countryside, however, children tend to love free or unstructured play. They usually hang out with friends to play football, hide and seek or whatever game they can come up with. This is because cities are crowded and might be unsafe for children to play unsupervised while rural areas have vast open space where children can spend their spare time whatever way they want. (*structured = organized: được tổ chức / unstructured play = free play : chơi tự do /play unsupervised: chơi không có giám sát)
Do you think boys and girls enjoy the same free time activities?
-
Well yes and no. Both share some favorite activities in common such as listening to music, playing digital games or watching funny videos on social media. However, boys are more likely to engage in physical activities such as playing football than girls who tend to prefer sedentary activities like playing with their dolls or cooking toys.
Do you think children did the same activities in the past?
-
Of course not. Modern technologies have encouraged young people to lead a sedentary lifestyle and become less interested in outdoor leisure activities. In the past, children used to enjoy their spare time outdoors because there weren’t many things to do at home. Today, however, there is a wide range of fascinating activities for children to kill their time at home, such as playing video games, surfing social media, watching the latest movies on TV, the list could go on and on.
Do you think children have enough free time today?
-
I’m not sure about other countries but in Vietnam I suppose they are usually deprived of precious leisure time. This is mainly because their parents and teachers are expecting too much from them and pushing them too hard. They often go to school full time 6 days a week and even have to attend extra classes at night and on Sunday with the view of achieving exceptional grades to please their family, and that’s a real shame (= that’s bad).
Do you think children in Vietnam should have more free time?
-
Oh yes very much so. Without a doubt, leisure time is vital for anyone regardless of age. Children even need more spare time than adults I believe. Their bodies and minds are yet to fully develop so it’s cruel to force them to work or study around the clock (=all day). Most importantly, they should have time to play, especially free play which is of paramount importance to their cognitive, emotional and social development. Unstructured play can promote creativity, social skills and overall well-being for kids.
Do you think parents should organize leisure activities for their kids?
-
I’m afraid I disagree. While parents’ supervision is necessary to ensure that children spend their free time wisely and safely, I dont think it’s a good idea for adults to get too involved. Especially when it comes to playing, spontaneous play is seen as more effective and beneficial for children’s growth than organized games because it can foster/ sharpen their critical thinking, problem solving and creative skills. Of course, adults do need to keep an eye on their kids but they should never force their own ways on them.
