The illustration demonstrates how small and large Venus flytraps handle small prey for the optimized use of their digestive enzymes. (optimize: tối ưu)
Overall, these carnivorous plants use their colorful, unique traps that look like flowers to lure and capture insects. Depending on the size of the prey in relation to its size, the plant determines whether the prey should be consumed or released. (carnivorous: ăn thịt / lure = attract / prey: con mồi/ consume = eat / release: thả ra)
Specifically, when a little insect like an ant enters a flytrap and touches its trigger hairs, electrical signals will be generated and cause the trap to shut, blocking the prey from climbing out. In case of a small flytrap, digestive enzymes (men tiêu hoá) then are released, the unlucky insect will be gradually consumed so that the plant can absorb (hấp thụ) essential nutrition from it.
However if it is a large flytrap, the tiny ant appears too small relative to the trap (relative to: so với). After determining that the prey would not be worth its time-consuming digestion process, the plant will open its trap to let the victim crawl out (bò ra) . (worth: xứng đáng / time-consuming: take a lot of time)
