The diagrams illustrate the differences between an underground tunnel and an underwater tunnel in two Australian cities.
Overall, both of them are twin-tube motorway tunnels that help ease traffic congestion and disruption on the main bridge or street. There are significant differences between them, however. Tunnel B appears to be more modern and larger, and obviously costs more than the other. (to ease traffic… = reduce… )
Specifically, tunnel A was constructed between 1987 and 1992 at a total cost of 556 million dollars. It took only 4 years to build tunnel B (2004 - 2007) but its cost is twice as much as that of the other, at 1.1 billion dollars. Based on their cross sections, the former features twin tubes with two lanes in each while the latter offers three lanes in each tube.
In terms of size, tunnel A is 25 meters deep and 2.2 kilometers in length whereas the other is 10 meters deeper and 1.4 kilometers longer. With regard to their location, the first tunnel is constructed below a sea or a river, and therefore needs a thick layer of sand and stone for reinforcement and water resistance. Tunnel B, on the other hand, is built beneath a street and thus does not require this extra layer. (208) (reinforcement: sự gia cố/ water resistance: sự chống nước)
