In recent years, the world has become increasingly interconnected and interdependent. It is therefore argued by some that international news should be incorporated into school curricula. Others, however, maintain that school time should be dedicated to core subjects that are deemed more crucial. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument and then I will give my own perspective.

There are plausible reasons for the advocacy of teaching international news at school. Firstly, this subject can help students enrich their mind with the latest knowledge of various fields such as economy, culture, science and technology. It might spark their interest in a certain realm that is likely to become a fruitful career. Indeed, it has been scientifically proven that by constantly filling their mind with new information and experiences, people can renew their passion and sharpen their critical thinking which is crucial for their success. Secondly, teaching international news at school enables young generations to cultivate global thinking. This means that they can broaden their perspective and form long term visions. They are likely to look beyond their national borders and become aware of issues facing the whole world. This mindset will prepare them better for global citizenship, promote cultural tolerance and boost their engagement in global issues such as global warming and climate change.

However, other people assert that teaching international news at school is just a waste of time. The principal argument against the integration of global news into school curricula might be that this subject is too complicated for students to comprehend. International affairs are closely linked to the intricate relations between nations and concepts such as geopolitics sound too complicated for young learners to fully grasp. Furthermore, news needs to be updated constantly, making it tough for teachers to prepare lesson plans and teaching materials. Finally, students in many countries are already overwhelmed with classes, homework and exam preparations for core subjects at school. The inclusion of such a complex field into the current system might be counterproductive as students tend to become disengaged in class due to intense pressure.

In conclusion, I am a strong advocate of teaching international news at school, not as an independent subject but as an integral part of a related subject such as history. However, this scheme must be executed with great caution, considering the age and the course load of students.
