Ielts Essay Traditional Ideas and young people
The older generations tend to have very traditional ideas about how people should live, think and behave. However, some people believe that these ideas are not helpful in preparing younger generations for modern life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?
The debate surrounding the relevance of older generations’ perspectives to the lives of younger generations is a timeless one. Many older individuals adhere to traditional views on how people should live, think, and behave, often shaped by cultural norms and historical contexts. It is argued that these traditional ideas are not helpful in preparing young people for the complexities of modern life. I partly agree with this notion and this essay will elaborate on my reasons. (timeless = forever / adhere to = follow, comply with: tuân thủ / social norms: chuẩn mực xã hội / context: bối cảnh)
One argument in favor of this belief is that the rapid pace of change in society, driven by technological advancements and globalization, has created a cultural landscape that is vastly different from that experienced by older generations. For instance, career paths, communication methods, and social structures have evolved, necessitating adaptability and innovative thinking rather than rigid norms and conventions. Traditional ideas may inadvertently hinder young individuals’ ability to navigate these changes effectively, resulting in outdated expectations that mismatch with contemporary realities. (convention: quy tắc ứng xử / inadvertently hinder : vô tình cản trở / navigate: tìm đường / mismatch: không hợp / contemporary= modern)
Moreover, younger generations tend to prioritize values such as inclusivity and diversity, and challenge conventional norms. The rigidity of traditional beliefs can create barriers to understanding and acceptance, thus impeding the progress and development of a more cohesive and open society. For instance, issues surrounding gender and identity are more fluid today, and clinging to traditional ideologies such as women staying at home and being a full-time caregiver of the family can lead to alienation rather than fostering understanding. (*challenge: thách thức / conventional = traditional / rigidity: sự hà khắc / impede = hinder = prevent / cohesive: gắn kết / fluid = flexible / cling to: bám lấy / sole = only/ alienation = isolation: sự cô lập)
However, it is essential to recognize that not all traditional ideas are detrimental. Underlying values such as respect, strong work ethic, and community can lay a solid foundation for younger generations in a rapidly-changing world. Therefore, the challenge lies in the ability of young individuals to re-evaluate and preserve traditional values that still work and discard those that no longer serve them. (* Underlying: cốt lõi / work ethic: thái độ, đạo đức làm việc / lay a solid foundation: đặt nền móng vững chắc)
In conclusion, while traditional ideas have their merits, they must be adapted to fit the current societal context. Emphasizing a selective integration of traditional values with modern principles is crucial in equipping younger generations with the tools they need to thrive in an ever-evolving world. (fit = match: phù hợp với / selective: có chọn lọc / ever-evolving = ever-changing: không ngừng thay đổi)
